Mrs. Shelnutt was born in Heard County, Georgia, to the late Henry and Clara Eley Hyatt on
April 10, 1929.

She had been a resident of Centralhatchee for more than 70 years and taught at
Centralhatchee Elementary School for more than 30 years, where she also served as
principal. She taught many of the local children and was known for her loving heart and stern
but fair discipline.

“Miss Irma,” as she was most often called, loved people and conversation, and was an expert
at both.  She cooked for and fed everyone she could convince to eat.  She was well-known
for her love, caring, and generosity toward all.  As a big part of Shelnutt’s Grocery and S & L
Auto Parts, she always greeted customers, friends, acquaintances, and strangers equally,
graciously and enthusiastically with a sincere and open smile of welcome, ready to listen and
help as much as she could.

Miss Irma was also an active member of Centralhatchee First Baptist Church where she more
than willingly helped in any and all ways she could. She taught the adult Sunday School class
for many years and was a member of several committees. She rarely missed a Sunday
morning service and made every effort to attend when she was able.
