Her funeral will be held Thursday April 14, 2022 at 2:00 PM in Glenloch Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Caney Head United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will accept guests in Glenloch Baptist Church Thursday afternoon from 12:00 – 2:00 PM prior to the service.
Hazel was born on September 24, 1949 to Luther and Cordie Huckeba Dickerson in Trion, Ga. Looking for better jobs, her family moved to Smyrna, GA. Hazel attended school there through middle school. One week before she was to start ninth grade, her family moved back to Heard County to take care of her ill grandmother. Hazel essentially called Heard County home for the rest of her life.
Hazel lived life to the fullest. She tried her hand at college after high school for a brief stint. However, she was forced to grow up quick and enter the working world. She was always independent and self-sufficient.
Hazel married Wayne Reeves from Forney, Alabama on December 17, 1972. Hazel and Wayne had one son, Skip, and their entire world revolved around him. Hazel and Wayne took great pride in being active and involved in all of their son’s activities.
Wayne would go on to work for 26 years at Plant Wansley, while Hazel worked numerous jobs in the West Georgia area, including stints at Southwire, Tanner Hospital, Sony Records, and North’s Superette. At one point in her life she worked four jobs at once: Hannah Electric, Captain Billy’s, North’s Deer Processing, and the Heard County School System. Needless to say, sometimes life was tough, but she proved to be tougher. Hazel was a determined and hardworking woman.
For Hazel and Wayne, it was a lifelong dream to be self-employed. After much prayer, they took a chance and cashed in all of their chips (or retirement) and founded Reeves Supply. They began their business in the basement of their family home. Having worked so many different jobs, Hazel used her years of experience to do whatever needed to be done.
By the grace of God, awesome employees, and faithful customers, Reeves Supply grew for 20 years. Through Reeves Supply’s success, Hazel gave back to her community and tried to help nearly any person she encountered that was in need or had fallen on hard times.
Hazel once said that she asked God for guidance on their business venture, and the chips just fell into place. Given this, she felt obligated to help others in need if at all possible. She believed in treating her employees like family and always wanted to pay them well for their hard work and loyalty.
Hazel was a woman who found her true calling, became successful, and earned respect in a male-dominated industry. It is as if God used all of the trials, struggles, and different jobs to shape Hazel into the savvy, well-respected businesswoman that we all know and love. All of her customers were family, and Mrs. Hazel, as she was known in the poultry industry, was respected by all.
Skip married Jessica Brown Reeves and, together, they had the true highlights of Hazel’s life, her three granddaughters: Tyler, Rylee, and Layne. Known as “Mer” to her girls, she worshipped the ground they walked on and played a vital role in shaping them into the young ladies they are today.
Even after Hazel became sick, her desire to love and help others didn’t subside. With the help of a few close friends, she started Three Sisters Food Pantry, where she distributed food to families in our community every Monday up until the day the good Lord called her home.
“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” - 2 Corinthians 9:6-8
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Reeves, and her parents, Luther and Cordie Huckeba Dickerson.
