Jim Short named heard county fire chief and ema director

Chief Jim Short was named Heard County's new Fire Chief and EMA Director Friday, July 16, 2021. Chief Short has been in the fire service since 1981. He volunteered with the Heard County Fire department until 1983 when he began his career full-time. Over his long career with Heard County, Chief Short earned his Fire Science Degree, serving as Deputy Fire Chief for the past 8 years. Chief Steve Wirth has served as Fire Chief for Heard County since 2009 and will be retiring to spend time with his family. We would like to wish Chief Wirth all the best in his retirement. Chief Short moved to Heard County in 1979, graduating from Heard County High School in 1981. Over the years, Chief Short has served the Heard County community in various ways, as a volunteer coach and he served overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan serving as a contract firefighter for the Army. Chief Short is married to Tracie Short, a Franklin Post Office employee, and has two children, Haley Harris (Jeffrey, son-in-law) and Jeremy Short. Jim and Tracie are expecting their first grandchild this November. Help us congratulate Chief Jim Short on his appointment and wish him well in his duties.
